"Elimination Communication" -- A Wacky (or Wise) Way To Avoid Using Diapers?

Apparently, cats aren't the only ones who can be trained to use the toilet.
Did you know that your wee bitty baby is also capable of reducing his or her carbon footprint?
My daughter, who has 4 children of her own, just told me that green-minded parents can take things to the next level by boycotting diapers altogether.
All you have to do is read the facial expressions and body language of your child, hold them over the toilet and give them a hand signal that gives them the a-okay to answer the call of Mother Nature.

I had no idea that you could train your mini-me -- sort of like Pavlov's dogs -- to anticipate sweet relief in quite this manner.
I did a little research online and it's estimated that a typical child runs through 8,000 disposable diapers -- so if you're fast-acting and you keep your eyes peeled on your baby at all times, I suppose that you'd be doing the environment a great service. But what about your sanity?
Does anyone in the Greenwala community have any personal experience using this technique?
What do you think are the pros and the cons?
People who have never heard of this before -- now that you've gotten the 60 second promo, what do you think?

Environmentally - major thumbs up.
Saving thousands of dollars by eliminating the need to purchase diapers? Wow. That is huge.
Avoiding the potty training during the terrible twos and threes? Priceless.
Does this work for Labrador Retrievers and Lovebirds?

I'm dying to hear if anyone in this community has first hand experience using this technique and if it's actually reliable. It seems like you could save a TON of money and really be uber-green if you stuck with it.
For traditionalists who want some security against leakage and major blow outs, here's a step-by-step tutorial that shows how to make homemade eco-diapers: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=268646.0
If a baby were to materialize in my arms right now, I think that I'd try a little of both...
