Mark Roberts' Cartoon, "The Day The Earth Stood Still"

Sometimes, a picture is worth just as much as the words that surround it.

Multiply that sentiment times 44 and you have the comic strip created by Mark Roberts (below).

Something tells me that our species' cluelessness regarding the harsh impact that we've had on our planet will still not be derailed despite our folly being played out in graphic glory (or horror).

Why do we do what we do? More importantly, will we ever have a jolting realization before it's really too late?

Thanks for sharing. Very sad. Very true. What do we do?

Personally, I think that all of us have to stop having a mentality where we're just "in it for ourselves". Here's a perfect example. Despite the fact that Guyana's contribution to our global greenhouse gases has been virtually nonexistent, they have just launched an internationally renowned Low-Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) which is the first ever to combat climate change by preserving forests. In the next 5 years, the government of Norway is offering them a significant financial incentive (on the order of $250 million) to preserve their forests by pursuing more sustainable forms of economic development. Of course, I can hear people out there saying, "Sure, they're getting money...so of course they're going to try to help the planet" but what they should be focusing on is the fact that that tiny nation has barely produced a blip of CO2 (compared to the US and China) and yet they are stepping up to the plate and making an effort to change their ways. Hel-loooo...why aren't each and every one of us applying that philosophy to our own lives?
