As soon as the air gets chilly, all sorts of unpleasant things tend to happen to your skin and any body parts that are exposed to the elements.

I used to reach for the petroleum jelly to cure my skin ailments because that's what my mother and her mother did, and then a few years ago, it finally hit me -- I've been rubbing solid fossil fuel oil into my body this whole time!!

In an effort to green up my act, I researched a lot of different emolient alternatives and found that at least in terms of treating my chapped lips, this simple 3 ingredient recipe really does the trick.

Hopefully it'll help you, too -- it never fails to rehydrate tender skin since it penetrates really deeply and I like the fact that the oil base is vegetarian (it's extracted from castor beans).

RECIPE:

1/2 teaspoon of honey

1/2 teaspoon fresh squeezed lemon juice

1/2 teaspoon castor oil

Mix all ingredients well and apply liberally to chapped lips right before bedtime.

On a slightly somewhat related note, if you're looking for a homemade lip balm with some color to it, this recipe for beet root glycerin stain works really well.

In our household, we generally apply clarified butter(ghee) to take care of chapped lips. Put a pinch of clarified butter in a teaspoon and warm it over the stove and apply on the lips. Cold also works but it is better if the butter is warm. It works well for us. Just another option to try.

Surinder, your recipe sounds much easier (and frankly, a lot more delicious). Thanks for sharing -- I'm going to try it out tonight ;)
