Green and Spice Fish Curry

Serves 3-4 people

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 25 minutes

Ingredients

½ lbs white fish fillets (sole, cod, whiting are all appropriate)

½ teaspoon turmeric

1 teaspoon salt

2-3 tablespoons olive oil

1 teaspoon fennel seeds

1 teaspoon mustard seeds

1 teaspoon cumin seeds

2-3 cloves garlic, grated

1 inch piece ginger, peeled and grated

8-10 curry leaves

1 red onion, finely diced

1 green bell pepper, finely diced

2-3 hot Serrano chilies, finely chopped

2 tomatoes, coarsely chopped

1 cup of low fat organic or homemade yogurt

¾ cup finely chopped cilantro

Method of Preparation

1.       Rub the turmeric and half the salt on the fish and set aside.

2.       Heat the oil and add the fennel, mustard and cumin seeds and wait for the mustard to crackle. This about 20-30 seconds.

3.       Add in the garlic, ginger and curry leaves and sauté for about 1 minute.

4.       Add in the onion, bell pepper and hot chili pepper and sauté stirring well for about 5-7 minutes until the vegetables are soft and onion is turning golden at the edges.

5.       Add in the tomatoes and cook on low heat for about 10 minutes. Stir in the yogurt and bring to a simmer.

6.       Mix in the fish, remaining salt and most of the cilantro and cook for 5-7 minutes.

7.       Turn of the heat and add the remaining cilantro and serve with rice.

This sounds like an absolutely stellar combination. I've only had green curry once before in a restaurant and it tasted really too earthy for me, but I really like the ingredients in your recipe, so I think that this will be a winner. I'm having my parents over for dinner on Saturday -- can't wait to dazzle them with your recipe :)

I love fish in any form. But this fish curry seems like is going to be especially enticing for my pallets. I am certainly going to try this recipe. Thanks Rinku, for the post. I always wanted to cook fish myself and try some variations with it. Now that I have all the detailed instructions, I will try making fish curry. Thanks again.

    Bob,

Thank you so much, please do let me know if your parents like fish curry. Just as a note, their are two variations of "green curry", the Thai variety is richer and flavored with generous doses of coconut milk. The Indian variation is usually green due to the use of herbs like cilantro and mint and tends to be lighter.

    Surinder,

My husband loves fish too, so I cook a lot with fish. If you have time, take a peek at my food blog, you might find something of interest.
