Our Rabbit, Stu
Back to contest entries
Stu treads lightly on the earth, in so many ways. He eats local
organic vegetables from our garden and salvaged from the co-op compost
bin. His hay comes from a local farm and his litter is made of
recycled newspaper. He reuses a water bottle and litter box from a
previous bunny owner, and dines on plates that were otherwise bound for
the dump. All of his toys have also been saved from landfill- wooden
boxes from local restaurants, old children's toys and picnic baskets
that are getting tossed. These efforts reduce his consumption of new
goods and the carbon-emitting fuels associated with the production and
transportation of them. They also increase his reuse of old goods,
extending their utility and lessening the impact of trash.
Furthermore, Stu contributes to recycling: all the waste he produces-
his leftover hay, litter, and droppings- is composted to add nutrients
to the organic garden that feeds him.
On another note, Stu is a rescue who was saved from going to a shelter.
He enjoys his life as a house rabbit in Brooklyn, NY, where he
romps around quite freely.
