This is Twister, an animal cruelty rescue dog who inspired us to start a community pet food bank. We are an eco-conscious household and we do many things to help impact how we treat the world around us. We bake his morning biscuits so no packaging is needed. We buy hemp or recycled product toys and collars. We make his bedding out of old blankets and beds. We recycle all of the paperboard and packaging from his evening meals. In addition, Twister teaches other people at a local vet hospital about how to care for special needs dogs while still being eco-friendly. He has to have his bladder expressed (his back was broken at his previous owners) and he teaches people that those puppy training pads are totally unnecessary. You can make reuseable ones out of old infant crib mattress covers and towels!

One last thing-- Twister inspires our community to reuse and recycle by being the inspiration and posterchild for our pet food bank. He gives people a place to donate leftover food and supplies and then redistributes it to people in need. We are currently helping over 1200 families a month-- all because of this one special smiling face!!!

Wow Twister! That is a totally cute picture! I'd love to hear more about those morning biscuits. Could you post a recipe? And could you tell us the story of how you became a therapy dog? That sounds like lots of fun. Love Egon.

And I hope you feel much better now.

      Hi Egon!

Twister isn't a formal "therapy" dog (you have to go to canine school for that and pass an obedience test).... Given some of his physical limitations from his injuries (he has head trauma and serious physical issues) he can't really perform the skills. (For instance we have to feed him with a spoon because he doesn't recognize the food dish and stay there to eat!!)..... I'm a veterinary nurse and his other mother is a canine rehab/massage technician so we have a different experience than most:) Twister comes to our referral practice to help other pet parents understand how differently able dogs can live comfortably and happy (which he is!!). The smile in this photo never leaves him!!

As for biscuit recipes-- this mom is traveling for a few days at a conference. I'll post his two faves-- a ginger/molasses and a peanut butter when I get home tomorrow.... Thanks for writing in! I've only lived with him since last October and I'm so glad to share his smile....
