Hello, I'm Emily Polk, and these are your CSR Minute headlines for Thursday, June 17th:
Humana associates will save more than 18 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions by participating in the EPA's Change the World, Start with Energy Star campaign. Through small changes in everyday activities, Humana employees will save more than 9.9 million kilowatt hours of energy and more than $1.4 million dollars in energy costs. If every American household made a similar pledge, the EPA says it would save more than 110 billion kilowatt hours of electricity, more than $18 billion dollars in annual energy costs, and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of more than 18 million cars.
The China Development Bank has announced that it made $7 billion dollars in loans to small- and medium-sized enterprises-SMEs- last year. It also made $12.4 billion dollars in loans to low- and middle-income families. The numbers are included in CDB's CSR report, its third such report after joining the UN Global Compact in 2006. The UN Global Compact is a policy initiative for businesses committed to aligning their operations and strategies with principles relating to human rights, labor rights, environmental protection, and anti-corruption.
