Scientist Creating Biofuel Out of Grass Clippings

Here is a great news report about the possibility of using grass as a source of biofuel.  I love seeing these types of reports as it gives me more confidence about seeing alternative fuels for vehicles in the near future.

Enjoy!

TRANSCRIPT: While we're cursing the pumps, scientists are searching for alternatives.

This grass is not just greener, it could be powering your car.

"So we have a billions tons of year of this stuff and it just, it sits around and it rots and it goes up into the atmosphere...why not use that and make energy out of it before it rots," says John Regalbuto of the National Science Foundation.

In Brazil, nine out of ten cars run on sugar cane ethanol here in the US corn-based ethanol is more of a supplement.

But technological leaps are making it possible to break down farm leftovers like corn stalks, grass, weeds and wood to be used as fuel

"We can utilize the existing infrastructure of oil pipelines, of storage tanks, of refineries and of the engines. 18 We won't have to make any modifications to engines or anything," says Regalbuto.

Oil giants like Shell are dipping their toe into the biofuel pool and so is Exxon which hopes to one day make gasoline from algae.

"We're pretty excited about it actually. We see this as a, as a potential new source of fuel that has lots of benefits -- it's renewable fuel, it can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and provide us all with a new source of energy, says Alan Jeffers, a spokesman for ExxonMobile.

But how soon?

"I think there's a lot of optimism relative to the vehicle fleet we have today. Expect the same cars to become more efficient and to use more of some different fuels. But new cars, new fuels - long way off," says energy analyst Kevin Book.

Meanwhile, scientists continue the search for green fuels that make sense -- and save money.

Biofuels add to carbon overload and global warming iissues. Unless we develop a great trapping /storage devise that can then Use the waste before it builds up and .?....also the water, soil, moncropping issues ..using byproduct waste is ok but still back to the carbons....

This human species has to really change its thinking about what it means to be human. We have already taken more than our share of space on this planet . We need to change our lifestyle visions and use resources wiser, We must alter the economic models to comply with the evolved visions, We have to see us as opposed to us and them!

Repeating the old pattern based on growth of population and sales is a killer even if greened.
