Sharing Delivery Trucks: The New Wave of Sharing

Posted by Parina MuniApprentice Saturday, October 18 2008 2 comments

Apparently, much of what we need to know about living an eco-friendly life we probably learned in kindergarten. Like sharing. First there were ride shares, then car and bike shares. Now, companies in the UK are making agreements to share delivery trucks.

And not just any companies. Rival companies.

That’s right. In a new move to battle the rising costs of fuel in Europe, big-ticket companies are making agreements to share trucks and delivery routes. After a successful small trial run last year, 47 different supermarkets, food and drink companies, and consumer goods manufacturers are now jumping on board.

Although the UK program represents a mere 4-percent reduction in road miles driven by participating companies, the move still makes eco and economic sense. The move is estimated to save 48 million driving miles and 6 million gallons of diesel fuel. At today’s high fuel costs, this translates into roughly $59 million in the first year alone.

Man I wish my company could or would do that. But we can only haul our own product or we have to have a general freight license.

    Still ... maybe some day.

I blogged about sharing and "cooperative capitalism."

I think sharing is something we are going to have to do more of if we hope to accommodate 9 billion people on this planet.
