In 2002, my family moved into our first home, a one-level ranch built in 1961 that needed quite a bit of work. The air ducts were full of holes. There was no insulation in the walls. The dishwasher was so loud we couldn’t think straight. There was no washer or dryer. The refrigerator and microwave were 1970s relics. Where to start?
We set out to buy all new appliances with only Consumer Reports ratings and Energy Star stickers to guide us. I wish we had had Wattbot back then. Wattbot.com is a new website that helps homeowners sort through energy conservation, energy efficiency and renewable energy options then offers product and financing recommendations. They’re in preview now and will launch their full site in January.
I don’t usually get all gushy about websites but this one fills some very important needs. In order to address climate change in short order, we need to implement energy conservation, energy efficiency and renewable options ASAP. As a nation we’ll save billions of dollars by doing so. I know many people want to help, they just don’t know where to start.
In January, when you go on Wattbot and give them just a little information about your house, including geographic location, the site will be able to recommend:
- Energy efficient products and renewable energy systems
- Average monthly savings for the technology
- Rebates, tax credits and loans available in your area
- Best return on investment among various options
