Tell me how you think your region will look 30 years from now. Do you picture relentless gridlocked traffic, endless suburban sprawl, oppressive summer heat, and choking air quality? Or do you see vibrant, pedestrian-friendly villages powered by abundant, renewable energy and linked by clean, efficient mass transit?
Watching summer blockbuster movies, you would think our society dreams about a dark future. Apparently, our appetite is endless for movies about robots, aliens, gangs, climate change or asteroids trying to wipe out the human race. Identify the attackers in these movies:
• Terminator
• The Day After Tomorrow
• The Matrix
• Blade Runner
• Road Warrior
• Deep Impact
• Independence Day
• Armageddon
Fortunately, we have the power to dream of and create the sustainable future we want where humans live in balance with the planet that supports us. To get there, a sustainable future needs us to envision it and it needs us to make it happen. As Henry Ford once said “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, either way, you’re right.”
