Why not plant directly into a bag of potting soil?  I wrapped a bag of organic potting soil in contrasting strips of duct tape, and cut holes for drainage and a square on top for the plants.  I think more apartment dwellers would plant their own herbs and lettuce if they realized just how simple and inexpensive it can be.

By the way, the duct tape is used for aesthetic reasons only and it is not necessary to reinforce the soil bag in any way to use it as an effective planter.

Its an interesting way to keep plastic out of the trash dump and re-used in a creative way.
