Water Soluble Bikini Swimming In Big Pool Of Eco-Stupidity

When I first heard about the Revenge Shop's water soluble bikini, I scratched my head and wondered who in their right mind would pay $14.32 USD (9.99 Euros) for an eensie weensie bathing suit that disintegrates within 3 minutes when submerged in water.

I guess that I was a little slow on the uptake...helloooo, Revenge Shop
? Oh right, now I get it. Hmmm, I can also think of some other clientele who might appreciate this item, but I won't get into that right now.

Well, I figured that it must be made of a super eco-friendly material...maybe vegetable gelatine? Hey, it could even be dried seaweed for all I know.

Nope. Think 80% polyamide (which is another name for nylon, an engineered plastic) and 20% elasthane (which is a high strength, thermoplastic polymer commonly used for biomedical applications).

In plain English, both materials are derived from petroleum, a non-renewable and non-biodegradable resource.

The short story is that nylon and polyester are made from petrochemicals which create nitrous oxide, a greenhouse gas that is 310 times more potent than CO2.

I think that more than anything, I'm annoyed that a manufacturer could be so irresponsible to produce:

a) attire created with a toxic blend of chemicals that is unsafe for the wearer
b) a one-time-use garment (COME ON!!!) that dissolves in the ocean

How many of these bikinis have actually been fished out of the water following their prompt self destuction? My guess...zilch.

I'd imagine that too many of them have just dissolved in the ocean, leaving a chemical cocktail in their wake.

Worse yet, I bet that sea creatures have slurped up the remains instead.

In my opinion, there's nothing funny about this product -- the manufacturer was probably inhaling too much of the
nitrous oxide that their factory was kicking out to think clearly about the environmental ramifications.

I give this a massive thumbs down for eco-stupidity. What do YOU think?

I agree! I'm all for pranks between friends, but these folks are real wankers for not using an organic solution - there must be millions (I like the seaweed idea!).
