Within a few years, lithium batteries could become an antiquated and eco-unfriendly thing of the past and guess what humble sea slitherer we have to thank? Eels!

Scientists have studied the joltingly ocean faring creatures for years and in a nod to their self energizing capabilities, they are finally in the process of designing artificial bio-batteries that produce their own energy, much in the way that eel elecrocyte cells can create the power equivalent of up to 50 car batteries (600 volts of electricity).

The batteries -- which could potentially be used to power medical implants like hearing aids and pacemakers -- will be made out of artificial yet completely harmless and toxin-free cells.

These cells are expected to generate 28% more power than just one eel electrocyte cell and they will recharge via food energy that the human body takes in.

Researchers at Yale University and the National Institute of Standards and Technology have already found that stacking layers of artificial cells in a small 4 milimeter cube can produce a continuous power output of 300 microwatts.

One of the major bonuses of this pseudo-biomimicry power source is that it will be completely safe for both internal (human) and external environments since absolutely no chemicals or toxic metals of any kind will be used.

Just eat, and tah-dahhh -- you're good to go!
