SUMMARY:
Against the backdrop of the first industrial revolution that GE Founder Thomas Edison’s incandescent light bulb helped spark, GE discusses the coming clean energy revolution needed to counteract climate change and spur the economy. GE’s ecomagination initiative is committed to a diverse energy portfolio that includes renewable energies such as solar and wind power, in addition to fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas, as well as nuclear power, all of which are projected to play a large role in our energy mix for decades. So GE is focusing on increasing energy efficiency as well as reducing greenhouse gases and other environmental impacts. “But does it add up? Is it enough?” GE asks. “The short answer is no, it is not.”
That’s why “GE supports development of market-based programs to slow, eventually stop, and ultimately reverse the growth of greenhouse gases. To accelerate innovation it is crucial that governments send the right signals and create demand for clean technologies. Although there was some encouraging progress at the international climate change negotiations in Cancun in 2010, the commitments of the world’s governments do not yet provide the loud, long, legal signals needed.”
