Earlier this year plans for Qatar's bid and design of environmentally friendly stadiums for the 2022 World Cup was released.

Well earlier this week the plans and details for the main opening ceremony solar powered stadiums were released.  Qatar's ambitious eco-friendly plans have many praising their efforts while others question how sustainable and eco-friendly a solar powered stadium in the middle of a desert is actually sustainable?

The parking lot is filled with solar trees that will be used to provide shade for vehicles at the stadium and the energy generated by the solar trees will power the stadium.

Thanks to Design Bloom for additional details about the stadium:

The stadium has a near-circular footprint and sits on the masterplan's primary axis, which divides the stadium precinct into two halves. encircled by a reflective pool of water, spectators cross the ‘moat' to enter the building via six bridges. an outer pedestrian concourse extends from the water towards an array of smaller amenity buildings and a hotel at the stadium's perimeter.

The stadium sounds amazing and it seems like they are definitely planning for it to be sustainble so why are some questioning HOW sustainable the venue really is?  Well mainly because of the location of the stadium that it is in the middle of the desert.  Many feel that the distance and carbon footpront generated by fans/countries to travel to the venue and World Cup in Qatar out weight the benefits of the new stadium. What do you all think?
