Greenwala-2010-Top-10-Stori.jpg

As we move into the new year and we all are making our green resolutions for 2011, here is one final look back at our favorite stories of 2010. Back in April we relaunched the Greenwala site with a focus on several new channels and brought on a team of editors and writers that having been posting great content all year long.

So to make our list, we asked each of the Greenwala Editors to come up with their favorite stories of the year and then we narrowed the list down to the Top 15.

Greenwala Editors' Top 15 Favorite Stories of 2010

BEAUTY:

Editor: Elena Lipson aka The Eco Diva

- The Corporate Creation of Breast Cancer Month: "You might be surprised to know that the pink ribbon campaign was started by large corporations, not by grassroots efforts. It has been a marketing ploy from the very beginning."

So What's EWG Mean And Why Should I Use It?: In the confusing world of green beauty, we do have one resource that can help us wade through all the organic and natural claims. It's not perfect, but its the best resource we have to date

World's First Pedal-Powered Porsche for Art?: - I love a good paradox. Here we have one of the quintessential luxury sports cars brilliantly designed without an engine and depending solely on pedal power. That just seems too awesome NOT to include in this list.

Star Wars Sound Effects May Soon Be Required on Electric Vehicles - In 2010 we had several stories about EV's and the proposed audible warning sounds they may or may not be required to make. I think anyone will agree (or at least any geek will), that if EV's are going to make unnatural audible alert sounds, Star Wars sound effects would be an epic win!

Modern Day Flintstones House is NOT Fake - This little post was one of those stories you read and say "now that's cool." This house is in Fafe, Portugal and is made from stone. The story was not so much about how sustainable the house is or not, but online, the story became more about whether the images were real or not.

New Rotating Solar House Produces Five Times the Energy it Uses - This was another cool post and gained several views just for the wow factor. How can you go wrong with a solar sail? Here is a quote from the post about the house:

The Heliotrope solar-powered home created by German architect Rolf Disch rotates to follow the sun's rays. The design generates enough energy to fully power the home and feeds surplus energy to the grid, making it the world's first energy positive solar home capable of producing five times the energy it uses.

ENTERTAINMENT:

Lady Gaga Wears a Meat Bikini on Cover of Vogue Japan??  - Lady Gaga is known for her outrageous outfits, but this time she took it to a new level posing in a meat dress for Vogue Japan and made even bigger headlines when she appeared at the MTV VMAs in another meat dress. The infamous moments and dress led to many vegans and vegetarians getting upset, PETA chiming in with its statement, and countless parodies popped up leading to the meat dress becoming one of the "hot" Halloween costumes of the year. Gaga appeared on Ellen to try and clear the air with this statement: "Well, it is certainly no disrespect to anyone that is vegan or vegetarian. As you know, I am the most judgment-free human being on the earth,"

FAMILY:

Editor: Elena Lipson

How Toxins Are Making Our Children Chronically Ill - This article really hit home with me. As I look around at my friends with young children, I am hard pressed to count more than one handful of families where the children are free from some sort of illness or allergy, including my very own.

FOOD:

Editor: Whitney Lauritsen aka Eco Vegan Gal

Poker Face: You Can't Hide From What Your Body Is Telling You - An eye opening piece on how our body shows signs of poor health on our face and how changing your diet can improve it.

President Clinton Turns to Plant-Based (Vegetarian) Diet To Stay Healthy For His Family - One of the biggest food health stories of 2010 was Bill Clinton's choice to go mostly vegan. This post explains why he made the decision, how he's doing it, and a background on his history of poor health.

NATURE:

Editor: Jessica DiGiacinto aka Red Headed Writer

Thursday Pet Spotlight: Pit Bull Saves Two Strangers - None of us had any idea that the new weekly Thursday Pet Spotlight feature would become so popular, but this early post in the series became the most viewed and Liked story on Greenwala in 2010. Pit bulls have a bad rep, but close to 6,000 Likes later this inspiring story proves how wonderful pit bulls can be.

Rep. John Shimkus Says God Is In Charge of Global Warning - Not Us - Illinois House of Representative John Shimkus had no idea he would go viral in 2010, but his statements that "God is in charge of global warming" did exactly that. The video of Shimkus made big headlines once it went viral and perhaps we could ignore his statements as being ignorant, but he was up for RE-election and that just led to more fuel on the fire.

Quote from the post: So like, don't worry about that factory spewing black smoke into the air or giant companies like BP spilling oil into our water supplies - God's got it covered.

PETS:

The Pets channel is one of our newer channels and was recently added to the site officially in October when PETCO came on to the site as a sponsor of the channel.

Poop Powered Park Lamps in Cambridge, Massachusetts - This post about a man inventing a "Poop Machine" to convert dog waste into electricity caught our eyes immediately. Several stories were written about the machine and to know it was actually operational in Cambridge easily made it one of our favorite posts of the year.

TECH:

Editor: Jeffery Davis

Listen to Music Without Using Energy - I'm soooo ADD. I am always fidgeting with something, doodling, or messing with my ear bud wires when rockin' my iPod. This little gadget wouldn't just satisfy those of us that have such an antsy nature, but that very restlessness would charge this mp3 player.

This Low-Flow, Dual Flush Toilet Uses Water From Washing Your Hands For Its Next Flush - This was one of the most (2nd most viewed of 2010) popular posts in the green tech channel in all of 2010...and for good reason. A toilet designed to use the "greywater" from washing your hands in the toilet's next flush is just genius, don't you think?
