"Look Ma -- No Hands!" Could Be A Reality With 2040's Autonomobile

One of the great pleasures of mass transit (apart from the happy green knowledge that you're generating a smaller carbon footprint) is that you are free to indulge in whatever entertaining distractions float your boat. A crossword puzzle, people watching, adding a few more scenes to that soon-to-be-blockbuster screenplay...the sky's the limit. It's quite nice to keep your eyes anywhere but on the road...sometimes it's just a simple joy to allow your peepers to fall back into their sockets for a quick little cat nap while someone else handles the madness of navigating. Mike and Maaike industrial design studio's driverless Autonomobile (ATNMBL) concept vehicle, slated for 2040 production, takes the commuting experience quite a few steps further.

Understanding the absolute necessity of developing rapid, energy-efficient transportation that accomodates people's desire to spend their time on the road in a more constructive, far less mind-numbing manner, they designed a driverless, zero-pollution vehicle. Yeah, like KITT in the Knight Rider series but not exactly as easy on the eyes...maybe a bit more on the IKEA side of things. Pretty practical, though, so I'll give 'em credit where credit is due. Lacking the pesky trappings of traditional vehicles, the ATNMBL has no steering wheel, brake pedal, or actual driver's seat in sight -- it is designed solely to facilitate the enjoyment of commuting without ever lifting a finger to navigate. What really makes this alterni-vehicle even more intriguing is that it is equipped with roof-mounted solar panels and electric motors that are housed in each wheel.

Its futuristic tech sensibility only adds to its appeal. With a quick cell phone prompt, the ATNMBL pulls right up to you, beckoning you to hop inside and...well...live. Panoramic views through its electric glass sliding doors can't hold a candle to its comfortable interior (large enough to accomodate 7 adults). Reminiscent of a living room setting, it includes a comfy couch, easy chair, coffee table, television and wet bar -- no need to brown bag your liquorious libations with a built-in 24/7 designated driver! This vehicle is here to serve you, immediately inquiring where it can take you and through the magic of voice recognition and its GPS system, it happily obliges.  With all of the goodies going on inside of the Autonomobile, it's not surprising that the designers have abandoned sportscar aspirations in favor of a mini house on wheels boasting smooth lines and a modernistic edge. When you're truly enjoying the experience of automatic transport though, who really cares if you're cruising down the road in a chick magnet?
