I'm not one of those guys who's ever snickered about what goes on behind closed bathroom doors. We all have to let our body work its magic whenever it is good and ready -- that's just a fact of life. Of course, we're priviledged to be living in a highly-developed nation, which can have its good and bad points. One of the pluses is that whenever nature calls, we can slip into the nearest bathroom facility, get down to business, wash our hands and be on our merry way.
In third world nations, however, this kind of convenience is unheard of. Approximately 40% of the people in this world don't have access to regular bathroom facilities and water contamination is such a persistent issue that it is responsible for the deaths of far too many children.
Enter the Peepoo bag -- I know...the name says it all. A Swedish company created this single-use, easy-to-tote personal bathroom "pouch" which allows men, women and children to relieve themselves in whatever way makes the most sense to them (you don't want me to get all graphic here, do you?). Once they're done, they can wait up to 24 hours (without odor issues) before burying the biodegradable Peepoo bag in the ground. Since the inside of the pouch is coated with a layer of urea-impregnated gauze, whatever waste that's deposited inside is automatically disinfected. Here's the coolest part -- after decomposing underground for 2 to 4 weeks, the waste materials are converted into what the Peepoo folks call "high quality fertilizer". How can we make this work for baby bottoms?
