I HATE Proactiv Commercials

pa3step.pngThere was a time when Proactiv commercials were limited to late night infomercials.  However, now we see them all day, always with young starlets who are just devistated that their skin is anything less that perfect.

These commercials drive me absolutely crazy! Forget the toxic chemicals that are dangerous to the developing bodies they are marketed to.  What really bugs me about these commericals is the way they perpetuate the image that you are only beautiful if you are flawless.

In these commercials they have celebrities with no real acne problem.  In order to find even the tiniest blemish the camera zooms in so close, closer than anyone would see in real life.  When you look that close, anyone would find a flaw.  If you looked at these women from a normal distance, I doubt you'd see the blemishes at all.  And even if we did, so what?!  They are pretty small and insignificant.  Proactiv commercials certainly don't send the message that you are beautiful just the way you are.

The commercials do not take into account the fact that these starlets wear lots of stage makeup with nasty chemicals.  The makeup they are choosing is loaded with toxic chemicals, hormone disruptors and petroleum-based ingredients that prevent the skin from breathing and detoxing...so of course they break out.

These commercials prey on the insecurities of young women and, like magazines that use size 0 women, they promote an unattainable image of beauty that's destructive, not only to the young women who buy into their slick marketing, but to all women who see the commercials.  I think they do a real disservice to all women.

When I was practising pharmacy in the community, I worked hard to educate people about toxins, alternative source products, artificial fragrance and other contaminants. It was so frustrating to have to battle big businesses and Madison Ave advertising (read "brainwashing"). If it's seen on TV or in a glossy magazine, then it must be right. I am really concerned for those individuals who can't or won't evaluate the issues.

I remember my dad bought me this once and I just couldn't make myself use it not even once. I put a little bit on my finger but I just saw it and it looked all chemically and somehow I always think of irritated skin every time I see these commercials. I hate them too!!
