School is starting. As you are looking at greening your child's back-to-school, think about the hand soap that your child's school uses. Your kids probably wash their hands more times at school than they do at home. Most hand soaps used by schools contain nasties like fragrance, triclosan and other nasty chemicals. However, there are things you can do to protect your child from unsafe hand soaps:
Talk to your child's school - Tell them you have concerns about the ingredients in their chosen hand soap. If possible find out exactly what brand they are using and look up the ingredients, listing the ones that are dangerous or questionable and the health implications.
Offer to help them find a safer soap. For preschool & kindergarten classes where restrooms are often in the classroom, consider offering to supply a safer hand soap.
Send your child with a small travel sized container of hand soap - GoToob has small, silicone, drip proof travel containers that can be filled with your favorite hand soap.
Not sure what hand soaps are truly safe? Try one of these:
- Dr. Bronner's - Dr. Bronner's famous castile soap can be purchased in large containers and used at home, and to fill a travel container. Or, buy a 2oz travel size at 15% off during their August Monthly Special. They also have hand soap in a pump container that can be used to fill a travel size. Dr. Bronner's soaps are certified organic and fair trade.
- Earth Mama Angel Baby - EMAB Natural Non-Scents is a castile soap with shea butter and calendula. It comes in both a 1.67 oz self-foaming bottle and a 5.3 oz bottle. Natural Non-Scents is certified organic.
- Miessence - Miessence Refillable Hand Soap doesn't come in a bottle small enough for a child to carry in her backpack, but you can find smaller bottles online. However, Miessence Hand Soap is great if you're donating hand soap to your child's school as it's certified organic and the foaming bottles are refillable with the Hand Soap Concentrate.
