Let the Pinkwashing Begin!

71696_100210593382585_100210523382592_202_1942705_n.jpgIt's almost October which means it's almost Pinkwashing...er, I mean Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Like Hallmark Stores which start selling Christmas ornaments 6 months early, Corporations hoping to make a bundle promoting pink products which have nothing to do with Breast Cancer...or worse, actually help cause it, just couldn't wait until October to start manipulating people into buying their pink products.  It's not even October yet and many stores have whole sections dedicated to pink ribbon products.

In the coming month I'll do my best to keep up with all the personal care companies that are pinkwashing and write about them here.  Make sure you subscribe to the Beauty Channel's RSS feed so you don't miss any.  In the meantime read the article I wrote last year The Corporate Creation of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

I also invite you to join the Pinkwashing Hall of Shame on Facebook where we have a whole community of activist and bloggers coming together to speak out against the pinkwashers.  This is a great place to find other bloggers who are also writing on the topic.  My favorites are the breast cancer survivors who write from a place of deep offense at the marketing manipulation of corporations.  There are few people stronger than breast cancer survivors.  And they have little tolerance for corporations making a profit from exploiting their disease.

Are there pinkwashing companies you'd like to see me write about during Breast Cancer Awareness Month? Are there bloggers writing on the subject we should know about? Please post them below.

Good for you Danika! I'm so over this bogus campaign and I resent the hijacking of what used to be a happy color. is there anyone Not aware of Breast Cancer??? We hear about it a thousand times a day at this point. Are we being groomed for cancer? This is a complicated and frustrating issue. I'm working on a mammogram piece at the moment and it's disheartening--the focus should be prevention, not product placement, pink ribbons and mammograms which, like many pink ribbon products can also cause it according to recent studies. (Not to say women shouldn't get mammograms! Just that there is a discussion on the guidelines).

Thanks Leah. It drives me nuts. I hate pinkwashing, and really most cause-based marketing, especially from large corporations. It's inauthentic. It's not about a real passion for an issue, it's all about making money. And it's shameful.
