It's almost October which means it's almost Pinkwashing...er, I mean Breast
Cancer Awareness Month. Like Hallmark Stores which start selling Christmas ornaments 6 months early, Corporations hoping to make a bundle promoting pink products which have nothing to do with Breast Cancer...or worse, actually help cause it, just couldn't wait until October to start manipulating people into buying their pink products. It's not even October yet and many stores have whole sections dedicated to pink ribbon products.
In the coming month I'll do my best to keep up with all the personal care companies that are pinkwashing and write about them here. Make sure you subscribe to the Beauty Channel's RSS feed so you don't miss any. In the meantime read the article I wrote last year The Corporate Creation of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
I also invite you to join the Pinkwashing Hall of Shame on Facebook where we have a whole community of activist and bloggers coming together to speak out against the pinkwashers. This is a great place to find other bloggers who are also writing on the topic. My favorites are the breast cancer survivors who write from a place of deep offense at the marketing manipulation of corporations. There are few people stronger than breast cancer survivors. And they have little tolerance for corporations making a profit from exploiting their disease.
Are there pinkwashing companies you'd like to see me write about during Breast Cancer Awareness Month? Are there bloggers writing on the subject we should know about? Please post them below.
