Christmas Cookies

If you've been following Wheat-Free Wednesday by now you know that the gluten-free diet is anything but limited, even if it's meatless as well. But you may still be worried about what to eat on Christmas, and it's understandable when it seems like every holiday dish is full of wheat, meat, and dairy. Have no fear - Greenwala is here to reassure you that you won't be missing out on a delicious meal. Choose some of the recipes from below and you'll be full of Christmas cheer.

Snack/Hor D'eoeuvres:

  • Smoked Paprika Almonds ~ a spicy, garlicky snack with to pop in your mouth while waiting for the big feast to start, or in between tearing open presents
  • Fig Tapenade with Walnut Crackers ~ a perfect hor d'eoeuvre to bite into for the same reasons as above, or to bring to a holiday party.

Side Dishes:

  • Cranberry Sauce can be quite exciting when you add in different ingredients - check out this great list of recipes, which includes sauce made with wine, maple syrup, and spices.
  • Cashew Gravy ~ cashews are used to make a variety of meatless sauces and condiments, so why not gravy? This recipe is incredibly simple and may be a fun, unique topping on potatoes or other veggies at the table.
  • Roast parsnips ~ if you're not familiar with parsnips, this simple recipe is the perfect occasion to introduce yourself to these tasty carrot-like vegetables.
Main Course:
  • Tofu Turkey Roast ~ turkey is often the center of a gluten-free holiday meal, but if you're going meatless this is a great option, especially since most faux meats contain wheat.
  • Lentil Veggie Casserole Bake ~ if you're avoiding soy, give this simple, healthy entree a shot. Note - replace with dairy-free mozzarella cheese to make it vegan.

Desserts:

  • Christmas Fruit Cake ~ don't miss out on your favorite treat this season...well, maybe it's not your favorite, but perhaps if you try making it without gluten or dairy you might like it.
  • Sugarplum Cookies ~ "similar to Mexican wedding cakes, but rolled in a lot of powdered sugar and filled with plum jam, which compliments the cinnamon and nutmeg nicely"
Drinks:
  • Coconut Milk Egg Nog ~ a twist on the traditional holiday favorite and super easy to prepare.
  • Sparkly Pineapple Cocktail (alcohol free) ~ a simple combination of pineapple, strawberries, and sparkling water will result in a refreshing drink without the need for alcohol.
