Can you guess what your largest organ is? You may have to think back to the days for Biology 101, but I'll give you a clue. It's all over you right now! Yup, your skin is your largest organ and it regenerates itself every 28-30 days (give or take a day). While your skin will do this on its own, it can benefit the health of your skin to help it out along the way. One of the best ways to do that is to exfoliate. Here are some benefits to exfoliating your skin:

  1. Exfoliating helps your other products to do their job - For those of us who diligently moisturize each day (we all should!!) exfoliating can actually help the lotions and oils absorb more efficiently into your skin. This is because our pores can get clogged with all those dead skin cells coming off each day causing skin to look dry and flaky. Note: Since our skin does absorb so well, make sure you are using products free from petroleum, parabans and other harmful toxins.

  2. Reduces Fine Lines In Skin - Now for all of you ladies in a huff, I'm not trying to get you stressed out about getting older and become paranoid about wrinkles, but one of the best gifts you can give yourself (besides eating a mainly plant-based organic diet) is taking care of your skin. With all of the harmful elements that can affect our bodies, (i.e. wind, sun, cold, heat) we can take steps towards health by treating ourselves well. Youth is not the goal, health is!

  3. Keeps Skin Healthy Preventing Breakouts and Acne - This is one of the skincare steps that most of us skip. But it is one that can have an almost immediate noticable effect. Did you ever notice that mens skin seems to look better as they age. Well, they exfoliate each time they shave! And then they moisturize.

Weekly exfoliation is a simple way to keep skin refreshed and new cells thriving. And it won't hurt to lighten the makeup load a bit as well. When it comes to layering the face with product, less is definitely more. Here are a few super simple recipes for do-it-yourself exfoliants (As with ANY recipe - please make sure you are not allergic to these ingredients before using them):

  • Add a spoonful of cornmeal to your daily facial cleanser
  • Coffee grinds added to your moisturizer makes a great combination
  • Mix sugar or salt with olive oil

Make sure you wash these off completely using a soft washcloth that is used only for your facial cleansing.
