It features over 800 ornaments re-decorated by 60 American communities, celebrating local monuments and institutions like the Statue of Liberty and Mount Rushmore. The Douglas Fir, lit with environmentally-friendly LED lights, stands 18.5 feet high and nearly 13 feet wide.

Its a beautiful tree but its such a shame that it needed to be chopped down.  I know the Obama's are making an effort with the LED's and re-decorating the ornaments but still.  I wish they could've gone the extra mile and figured out a way to re-plant the tree again.

I totally agree with you about wishing that their tree still had roots attached. I know that they are probably expected to follow some type of convention (hence the chopped tree), but I would have leapt out of my seat with joy if they used some sort of DIY tree made from fallen tree branches and materials rescued from a recycling bin.
