If you're an athlete and never know what to do with those old practice floorboards, well here is your salvation. Designboom has recently recognized the making of cabinets made from reclaimed gymnasium floorboards that are no longer usable. Designed and produced by Soren Rose Studio in Denmark, these cabinets were crafted to resemble the nostalgic days of high school and none other than gym class. The materials used to produce these furnishings include: renewable, recyclable, and low-impact wood and trinkets. These cabinets bring back the glory days that high school athletes have lived through over and over again within their school walls.
"Gymnasium" was created in 2008, by using recycled gym floorboards from various high schools. The lines of the boards were then paired with graphic layouts, a silhouette, and finished to create a collection of innovative and imaginative furnishings for the whole family to enjoy. These cabinets pay respect to the sweat, stamina, and strength put into each step made on these floorboards.
Though these pieces are widely manufactured and produced today, they still have the original authentic appeal of what can only be found in a used high school gymnasium: the essence of determination, hard work, exceling, and victory. Some of the woods used in these pieces include: renewable pine wood, Danish oak, and water-based varnishes and lacquers, which are much less toxic to the environment.
