Merry day-after-Christmas and throughout the whole house, the gifts we’ve received have been strewn all about.
The trinkets and baubles, once hidden in wrap, are now sitting among mounds of torn paper scraps.
Since the hangover’s passed and the guests have gone home, time to sort through the remnants with a fine-toothed-comb.
“Don’t forget to go green!” we mumble quietly to ourselves, as we straighten the mess and place new stuff on our shelves.
Though gift bags and bows can be recycled with ease, our consumerist ways make chucking such stuff a breeze.
“Ironing ribbons and wrap just like Granny? (What a snore!) I can just buy it next year at my local Dollar Store!!”
The excuses they mount – countless reasons are given why “this time next year” we will finally give in.
But for now, as we guiltily approach our trash cans, and cram 80% recyclable materials inside with both hands, we justify by saying, “This is such a small drop...” while our neighbors X 10,000 ditch holiday evidence nonstop.
When will the message reach all of us loud and clear?
We can no longer afford to be so cavalier.
Every tiny effort that we make to conserve might give Mother Nature the help she deserves to get back in balance and turn things around.
Or our selfishness could lead to her burial ground.
Time to make a difference...don’t wait – volunteer.
Recycle it, repurpose it, reuse it next year.
