On occasion, when a person has the entire house all to themselves and they’re in juuuust the right mood, they may find the allure of a mirror far too strong to shrug off. So, in a special moment of carpe diem when guards are down and the ambiance is especially magnifique, it can be perfectly acceptable to slide in front of the looking glass in your skivvies, deliver the vocal performance of a lifetime and then blow smoke from the index finger guns that you’ve used to shoot up your walls and ceiling. It’s only when you flash a triumphant, knowing smile that the sobering reflection of yellowed corn-kernel-teeth hits you right between the eyes.
Maybe you’ve wrestled with a long-term addiction to cigarettes or downed one too many cups of coffee or wine in your time…or perhaps you’re genetically predisposed to having off-white choppers. Whatever the circumstance, if you want to restore the wow-factor to your smile, you can do it in a remarkably easy, eco-friendly manner (and once-and-for-all give the cold shoulder to the prepared pastes and chemical rinses that dentists currently hawk).
First, it’s helpful to grasp a basic understanding of tooth composition. The exterior surfaces that we brush twice a day are made of the most resilient, dense material in our body – enamel – the very same stuff that protects eggs. This material, composed of mineral salts, calcium and phosphorous, is 95% inorganic, which explains why it is so hard and serves us well during the munching and crunching process.
While remarkably durable, at a fraction of a millimeter in thickness, tooth enamel is also surprisingly fragile. Its number one enemy? Anything acidic, including popular beverages like sports drinks, alcohol, soda and juice as well as pickles, honey and yogurt. Repeated consumption of these low pH items slowly but surely dissolves the mineral structure of our teeth, resulting in the deterioration of the enamel surface. So as it becomes thinner, the naturally-yellow core of each tooth “shines through,” resulting in a dull, lackluster smile.
The good news is that there are a number of green teeth whitening alternatives at your disposal, but as with so many things in life, all of them should be used in moderation. Fruit-based teeth whitening recipes (involving everything from crushed strawberries and lemon juice to rubbing citrus peels directly on the surfaces of the teeth) work effectively because they contain malic acid, a natural astringent that lifts food pigments and stains from enamel.
BUT, they can still compromise the integrity of the tooth structure, so please exercise caution and restraint! Rely on these alternatives no more than once a week and be sure to rinse thoroughly after each treatment.
1. Combine ½ teaspoon of baking soda with one crushed strawberry and allow the combo to sit on your teeth for five minutes before rinsing it off thoroughly.
2. Rinse your teeth with a solution of lemon juice (75%) and salt (25%).
3. Create a simple paste using one teaspoon of baking soda and a dash of hydrogen peroxide – but bear in mind that peroxide can cause your teeth to become sensitive with prolonged use.
4. Tea tree oil is a natural stain remover (as is baking soda), so squeeze two drops of the antiseptic on a damp toothbrush dipped into the bicarbonate and brush as you would with a traditional paste.
5. This link offers several homemade recipes (utilizing ingredients that you probably have on hand) to transform your teeth into gleaming white beacons of tah-dahhhh!
