The earthquake in Japan today and the tsunami that resulted is a tragedy of immeasurable capacity. Unfortunately things may even get worse as the country's oil refineries are turned into raging infernos and its nuclear power plants are compromised.

Eco-Snobbery Sucks says,

Japan has told the U.N. nuclear watchdog that a heightened state of alert has been declared at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant after Friday’s major earthquake, the Vienna-based agency said.

The International Atomic Energy Agency said it had also been informed that the plant had been shut down and that no release of radiation had been detected.

Japanese media reported separately that a leak was possible at the plant north of Tokyo as water levels fall, and that some 2,000 residents had been told to evacuate the area.

Check out this video of one of the refineries going up in flames:

I hope that any friends and loved ones you may have in the affected areas of the Pacific Rim are safe and sound.
