Boston's CITGO sign has endured everything from hurricanes, to potential dismantlement, and even the occasional home run. But starting tomorrow the famous sign will spend some pine time to better its game.

The legendary sign in Kenmore Square will go dark for two months while crews replace its 218,000 LED lights with brigher, more flexible, weather-resistant, and energy-efficient bulbs...9,000 feet of them, to be exact.

A CITGO press release says,

Work on the CITGO Sign is being undertaken under the watchful eye of Martin Foley, the "Keeper of the Sign" since 1965. Foley has supported CITGO for more than 35 years with the upkeep of the sign, braving hurricanes and lightning storms to ensure the sign burns bright. The new upgrades will help make Foley's job easier with more reliable, weather-resistant lights.

The update definitely will make his job easier, much easier. Foley told Boston.com that the LED lights currently used in the sign are out of production and he has been rigging the sign with "jumpers", electrical conduits he uses to spark energy across dead lights, in order to keep it lit.
