The interesting and great thing about living in the Southwest of London is the fact that you can never really get away from Nappy Valley. It seems as though everyone I know is having a baby and while finding gifts for the post-pregnant mom are usually less stressful (chocolate and spa treatments seem to do the trick) I still struggle with gifts for the baby, especially when I don't know how green the mother will be, how to reconcile gift giving with my own green preferences, all while gifting something that is healthy and fun for the baby. I thought it might help if I brainstormed some of the more popular green gifts that will hopefully elicit some suggestions from the readers as well.
Sophie the Giraffe: A favorite among all parents and kids. Fabulous for teething especially amongst the otherwise toxic plethora of plastic teethers out there.
Cuddledry Organic Towel: Cuddledry is a fantastic company with great products - and their supersoft baby bath towel, made with the finest unbleached organic cotton, is a perfect gift for any new baby. And they'll probably need more than one.
Organic Baby Blankets: Blankets, like towels, are of a necessity to a new baby and I think that if an infant is going to be exposed to something at close proximity for over 12 hours a day, it should probably be organic...and gorgeous.
Organic Sleep Suits: Sleep suits fall into a similar category as blankets but provide the dual purpose of blankets and pajamas (and when they get older, a bit of sleep training as well). They are also, like Halloween costumes - or any animal costume for that matter - extremely cute on little ones.
Soft Toys: We bought some of these for our son and he's grown very well with them. They're great for infants because they're brightly colored and machine washable (in case yours, like ours, "mistake" these for teethers) and are relatively simple to encourage imaginative play as your kids get older. There are a lot of great choices from Under the Nile, including a veggie crate.
Finally, something should be said about the homemade gifts. When I was pregnant, some of the most lovely and memorable gifts we received at the baby shower were homemade quilts, furniture and crafts. If you have any other suggestions for green baby gifts, we'd like to hear from you!
