What's one thing that Americans might enjoy even more than a big fat juicy steak or the latest electronic gadget? Fifteen minutes of fame is probably reasonable guess, and the Environmental Protection Agency is banking on our lust for being in the public eye with their latest video-based, eco-themed contest called, "Our Planet, Our Stuff, Our Choice." You certainly don't have to be a wild-eyed treehugger to partake in the competition -- which is running through February 16, 2009. In fact, sharing your own personal message regarding how you think community members can positively impact the environment via such efforts as composting, reducing/reusing/recycling and generally just consuming less might be received better coming from a typical middle-of-the-road citizen that everyone can relate to.
Specifically, the EPA is seeking brief 30 or 60 second video entries that identify "the connection between the environment and the "stuff" people use, consume, recycle, and throw away." They are encouraging free creative spirit -- whether you want to film a serious, witty or stylistic spot, their main criteria are that contestants stay focused on the themes mentioned above and fade out to the EPA's web address at the end of the video presentation. Their website offers a wealth of information that can be used as a foundation for your video brainstorming ideas, but if you prefer to wing it, then you might just want to focus on the prize details. The grand prize winner will secure themselves a tidy $2500, followed by $1500 for second place, $1000 for third place and finally, two student winners between the ages of 13 - 18 will each score $500 a pop.
