Years pass and we get loaded with clothes and shoes, all styles for all seasons. Our closet starts to get packed and we have less and less room that we do not know what to do. Wait! New York City has come up with an idea, “clothing recycling program.” It is obvious that the easiest way out is to throw all the clothing and shoes that we do not wear away, and we think to ourselves, “This is so last season,” “No one wears this anymore,” etc. However, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, Most of American throw almost 10 pounds of socks, jeans, shirts, and sheets per year and per person. This is where NYC’s idea takes place; in New York, where 190,000 textiles entered the city’s landfills in 2008, the plan would place 50 collection bins in high-traffic areas. Right now, there are many places without recycle bins; so it is hard for people to recycle their clothes. This is why the city is planning to take bids for a 10 to 15 years contract with a nonprofit company that will be responsible for the bins; an example will be Goodwill Industries International. Another situation that the NYC has found according to surveys is that people will not drive or go anywhere further than ten minutes to donate their clothes; we all know that it is easier to put the old clothes in a plastic bag and throw it away, instead of going somewhere and donate it. The whole point with recycling clothes, is for bin companies to be able to resell them for a lower price; that is why the clothes has to be in good conditions. Official in NYC think that this is an amazing idea, due to the fact that not only it will help the planet, and become a nationwide movement to recycle clothing; but also it could create jobs for unemployed people. In fact, this would be an amazing way to make people conscious about textile recycling. In case this idea becomes successful, it could be spread throughout other states and even throughout the world. So New York City people, support this idea, so the rest of the world could be part of it as well.
