Five Great Energy Ad Campaigns

Posted by Parina MuniApprentice Saturday, October 18 2008 0 comments

Feel like public service announcements about conserving energy are a sign of the times? Not necessarily so. As Americans, we’re old pros at straining our energy resources. That’s why starting in the 70s, governments and non-profit organizations began issuing public service announcements periodically to help keep our energy use under (limited) control. Our production skills may have gotten better over time, but the substance is pretty much the same: You can do your part to prevent blackouts, save energy, and cut costs too!

Some of our favorites….

Save Energy – A Tip From Your Better Business Bureau

Guaranteed to take you back in time, this Better Business Bureau ad features a giraffe and a squirrel reminding you not to waste energy when you’re not home.

Uncle Sam Wants YOU to Conserve Energy (PSA, 1980)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CO_UTzGqRDY

Just six months after an oil embargo and gas shortages in the U.S., the Alabama Department of Energy aired this PSA to encourage smart energy use.

Captain America - "Help Conserve Energy" (PSA, 1980)

From FuzzyMemoriesTV.com, Chicago’s online Museum of Classic Chicago Television. The quality’s not great, but it’s the only online recording available of a nifty cartoon ad from the U.S. Department of Energy. Help Captain America battle the Thermal Thief, the Wattage Waster, and the Cold Air Crook!

Energy Hog Commando (PSA, c. 2005)

From the Alliance to Save Energy and Energy Outreach Colorado comes a fun, informative set of public service announcements geared towards kids. Find out how you can help your family save energy at www.energyhog.org

Flex Your Power – Legacy (PSA, 2007)

This recent PSA strikes a more serious note, showing how our energy use can and will affect the coming generations. Produced by Flex Your Power, California’s energy efficiency campaign.

Have you seen a great PSA in your area? We’d love to hear about it!
