Just because many Americans think alternative energy is a joke, doesn’t mean it can’t be funny.
A recent study by the Pew Research Center released in April indicates that shows like Comedy Central’s The Daily Show may help their viewers understand more of the news than other news show audiences. So does comedy help interest and inform viewers about the topic at hand? The producers of AlternativeEnergy.com/edy hope so.
The new online comedy series showcases the cool, the weird, and the downright hilarious side of alternative energy. AlternativeEnergy.com/edy premiered on April Fool’s Day 2008, and is dedicated to using humor to draw attention to our need for new energy sources. Comedians from Boulder, Colorado (where the show is filmed) and beyond provide stand-up routines and fake infomercials a-la-Saturday-Night-Live. Poking fun at wind-powered beer, bikers, and the hybrid craze, the show seems to be drawing a good response from both users and comedians.
One notable comedic bit stars “Hippieman.” He pokes fun at our country’s inertia when it comes to developing alternatives to oil.
“I think we all agree that the big problem is oil, it’s energy. It’s not that we need to conserve it, we need to use it all up. They are not going to do a thing until it’s gone. Knowing that, I bought five SUVs and I put them up on blocks and I just run them 24/7. I’m doing it on stolen credit cards so it’s no skin off my back.”
Hosted by Chuck Roy (3rd Rock From the Sun, Will and Grace, and Last Comic Standing), the show films in Boulder and broadcasts three episodes weekly, with new comics and skits each time. The site also draws content from The Daily Show and Stephen Colbert's show.
