"We are part of a transformation," says Sultan Ahmed al-Jaber. " We are making history." The Abu Dhabi government is turning the petro-wealth into a diversified, sustainable economy. The success of which is "very, very high" on the agenda of the emirates leadership. The list of organizations following this initiatives is long. Among this is the Masdar Institite of Science and Technology (MI), which is embarking upon becoming the best place in the world for research into advanced renewable energy and sustainability. MI is just the beginning. There are also Masdar Industrial Investments, which is pursuing to become one of the world's top thin-film photovoltaic technology. Then there is Masdar's carbon reduction effort, and on the development of carbon capture and storage technologies. The Industrial Investment group also has a 'utilities and asset management branch' that would lead efforts into wind-farm development. A new city, Masdar City is being developed that will be 'super-green' for 40,000 residents and 1500 clean companies that is entirely carbon neutral, powered by renewable energy and equiped with a futuristic transportation system. Reading all this, I am awed by the foresight of the Abu Dhabi leadership. The plan of action shows farsightedness not seen in very many places in the world. I hope this progressive minded leadership is replicated at very many places in the world. For then, the world could become a better place for our grand children to live in.
