Carcinogen Found in Many “Natural” Skin Care Products, One Skin Care Specialist Fights Back
April 15, 2010 – Dr. Teri Dourmashkin was shocked when she found the results of a recent study: a number of skin care products that claim to be “natural” or “organic” have cancer-causing ingredients.
The Organic Consumers Association (OCA) revealed that ethoxylation – a process that provides mildness to harsher ingredients – produces 1, 4-Dioxane, which, according to the state of California, is a chemical that causes cancer. Because it is considered a by-product, companies are not required to list 1, 4-Dioxane on their labels. While this has been already revealed to be present in a number of conventional skin care products, this is the first time the toxin is shown to be in many self-proclaimed, but not certified, “natural” and “organic” products.
“People purchase 'natural' and 'organic' products because they feel these products will be better for their health,” says Dr. Dourmashkin, who holds a Doctoral Degree in Health Education from Columbia University. “These 'natural' labels may mislead consumers into rubbing toxins on their skin.”
For this reason, Dr. Dourmashkin founded La Vie Celeste Skin Care, Inc., and is releasing a new line of anti-aging skin care products designed to take advantage of powerful antioxidants and other natural ingredients – without opening you up to the risk of overexposure to many harmful ingredients.
In particular, Dr. Dourmashkin uses only R-Lipoic Acid in both her face and eye creams. Research indicates that R-Lipoic Acid may have far superior anti-aging properties when compared to the more commonly used Alpha Lipoic Acid.
“By only using non-toxic ingredients, we make La Vie Celeste products safe for all skin types, including sensitive skin. Our products can help bring back a healthy, youthful appearance that can help boost a woman's confidence, with no harm done to her skin or her health.”
La Vie Celeste's complete line of anti-aging products is available for immediate purchase at http://www.laviecelesteskincare.com, or you may call 1-866-921-9599. The products will soon be available at the New York City Fifth Avenue office of Dr. Raphael Kellman, M.D., who specializes in internal and holistic medicine.
"La Vie Celeste Day and Night Restorative face cream truly represents the next phase in cosmetics. I highly recommend it to my patients," Dr. Kellman stated
Are
all of La Vie Celeste products truly all-natural?
While it is their primary goal to use only all natural and organic ingredients in these products, sometimes it is necessary to use a non-toxic synthetic
ingredient when no equivalent can be found in nature. For example,
while R-lipoic Acid can be found in small amounts in some plants,
there isn't enough of it available for use in topical treatments or
internal supplements. Therefore, it must be synthesized in a lab.
R-lipoic Acid is referred to as the "natural" form of
lipoic acid because it more closely mirrors what our own bodies
produce versus the more commonly known Alpha lipoic Acid.
Additionally, it is often necessary to use a non-toxic synthetic
preservative in order to effectively prevent a product from going
bad. Many preservatives come from plant derived sources, but they
must undergo a chemical process to convert them into a viable and
effective compound strong enough to protect your products from
harmful mold and bacteria. Some companies use a combination of
essential oils, but in order for them to be effective, they would
need to be used at very high levels which may be harmful. One of the
preservatives we use is Cosmocil-CQ. Cosmocil-CQ is a safe and
non-toxic broad spectrum preservative which has been used in the
contact lens industry and in baby wipes for over 20 years. It is
paraben free and does not release formaldehyde. Even if a product is
labeled 100% all natural, it does not necessarily mean that it is
100% safe, particularly if it is not properly preserved. It might be okay for short term use such as 1-2 weeks if kept refrigerated.
Some
organizations such as the Natural Ingredient Resource Center (NIRC)
considers a product "all natural," if it contains at least
95% of ingredients which fit their criteria for natural ingredients.
The other 5% may come from ingredients that do not meet their
criteria for natural, but do not contain synthetic fragrances,
artificial colors, or ingredients from petrochemicals. Rest assured,
the La Vie Celeste product range does meet this criteria. Therefore, it can ethically stated that these products are "all natural."
Are naturally-based products safer than commercially
manufactured products that use mostly synthetic ingredients?
Research indicates that many synthetic ingredients used in skincare
products may be potential carcinogens. La Vie Celeste skin care
products contain a powerful blend of antioxidants that work
synergistically for the overall health of your skin. They are
completely free of harmful sulfates, petrochemicals such as mineral
oil and propylene glycol, peg-compounds, fragrance, colors and toxic
preservatives.
So let's save some face, and start treating our skin with Going Green in mind.
