Woolridge "Go Green" Classroom Contest

Posted by Woolridge ES Green ClubApprentice Monday, October 05 2009 0 comments

This is a new program that I'm working on for our school.  The purpose of this contest is to encourage students to become more active in protecting our environment.  I'm seeking people's input on ways to earn points, point values for tasks, ways to keep track of points, and keeping things organized.  It's important to keep things simple and not create additional work for the teachers.  If the contest causes too much disruption, the principal will not approve the program.

RULES

Students earn points for their classroom by completing tasks from the list below.  Points are earned using the honor system.  The Woolridge Go Green Trophies will be awarded to the classroom in each grade level with the most points.

Each student in the classroom can earn these points once every month:

  1. My family recycles at home.  (25 points)  Encourage families who do not recycle to start recycling.

  2. My family uses reusable grocery bags.  (100 points)  Encourage families to use reusable grocery bags instead of disposable bags.

  3. My family uses compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) at home.  (10 points/bulb)  Encourage families who currently use incandescent bulbs to switch to CFLs.

  4. I take the bus/ride my bike/walk to school.  (50 points)  Encourage families to not drive to school.

There are no limits for students to earn the following points:

  1. Volunteer to rinse juice pouches.  (50 points)

  2. Write a post for the Woolridge Elementary School Green Club blog.  (10 points)

  3. Draw a picture for the Woolridge Elementary School Green Club blog.  (10 points)

  4. Contribute a new idea to the Green Club's Idea Box.  (25 points)

  5. Recycle batteries at school.  (25 points)  No minimum quantity.

  6. Recycle printer cartridges.  (25 points)  No minimum quantity.

  7. Recycle Elmer's glue sticks.  (5 points/glue stick)  Classroom recycling coordinator can report number of glue sticks every month.

  8. Recycle juice pouches. (5 points/juice pouch)

Keeping track of points:

·         Points that are earned once a month will likely not change.  Send paper with point categories home with students.  Work with parents to tally points.  Students can notify teacher if they started recycling, riding bus to school, etc.
